The turnout was wonderful, with representation from 29 different high schools and members from classes 2001 – 2011. Thanks to the DMSF Alumni Network (D.A.N.) for their hard work planning the night and gathering raffle prizes, as well as their diligence in trying to contact missing alumni. If you want to join, contact amy@dmsf.org. As part of the Arthur J. Schmidt leadership program, 25 Scholars and staff worked together to prepare and serve dinner to 60 shelter residents. “It was my favorite thing I have done with DMSF. It was great to get to know the people we were serving and sit with them… I want to go back and volunteer on my own.” Kiera (Holy Trinity High School, ’12)

During the week long Language Empowers All People (LEAP) Program, Scholars worked with teachers and professional speech pathologists in one-on-one and group settings to develop and improve their communication skills. The second week-long program, called Ideal Student Workshop (ISW), focuses on study skills, time management, note-taking, and critical reading, thinking, and writing.

The culminating student debates are always a highlight as the Scholars have a chance to show off their progress and obtain feedback on their work.

Great news! DMSF is delighted to report that members of the graduating Class of 2011 have been awarded some of the most competitive college scholarships in the country! These awards include 14 Chick Evans scholarships, two Gates Millennium scholarships, one Questbridge award, one Golden Apple scholarship and one Posse scholarship.

Every year, DMSF Scholars collectively receive millions of dollars in college scholarships. This year is shaping up to be one of our most successful yet. Every DMSF scholar participates in a comprehensive four-year college counseling curriculum. DMSF’s full time College Counselor, Carol Lee Barry, assists students and families with the college selection and application process, and helps identify scholarship and financial aid opportunities.

On May 23, 2011 DMSF welcomed the Scholars of the Class of 2015 at our annual awards ceremony. Over 300 guests included family, friends, principals, teachers, and key note speaker, Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle. The 105 members of the Class of 2015 represent over 76 public and private elementary schools. These Scholars are now attending one of 41 different DMSF Partnership High Schools.
This summer, the 2015 Scholars will participate in the AT&T Bridge to Excellence Program. The two-week program prepares Scholars for the rigors and challenges of high school life, helping them be successful students. The program engages Scholars in the Ideal Student Workshop (ISW) and LEAP’s Language for Scholars program.
ISW focuses on core study skills, including organization, time management and note taking. Scholars in the LEAP program receive individualized coaching that targets some of the important elements of speaking and writing. At the beginning of the program, Scholars receive individualized speech goals which they work on throughout the week. The program culminates in student debates where scholars have a chance to show off their progress and obtain feedback on their work.
These two weeks are not only an opportunity for each new class to learn important new skills for high school, but also strengthen relationships between Scholars and DMSF staff members. We look forward to seeing the many achievements of the Class of 2015 Scholars in the years to come!
