Murphy Scholar
St. Ignatius College Prep, Class of 2020
Evans Scholar
University of Chicago, Class of 2024
Murphy Scholar alumnus Aldo Malaquias Cabrera grew up in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago with his mother and younger brother. When it came time for high school, the family moved to Brighton Park, and Aldo enrolled at St. Ignatius College Prep with the help of DMSF.  There, Aldo excelled in and out of the classroom. He posted grades at the top of his class and was a star caddie at Exmoor Country Club, despite caddie training day being the first time he set foot on a golf course!

Aldo spent the summers living at Lake Forest College as a residential caddie in the DMSF Caddie Program, where he made friends and participated in meaningful leadership programming. He credits this experience for shaping him into the person he is today. From helping him break out of his shell, learning to foster relationships, and opening the door to a variety of resources, he didn’t know existed. Because of his gratitude to everyone involved at DMSF, Aldo strives to give back and support students the same way DMSF helped him.

Today, Aldo lives on campus at the University of Chicago, where he studies computer science and participates on the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) board. He is a proud WGA Evans Scholar recipient, selected as part of the first cohort to attend the university.
"DMSF opens doors for students like me, who are first-generation, low income, and from immigrant communities...
students who otherwise wouldn’t have access to these opportunities or even know they exist.

DMSF has been one of the greatest opportunities I could imagine.

It has been life-changing to my success.
