Murphy Scholar Seniors Reflect on 2020
Thank you for your continual support of DMSF! Your annual contribution and dedication to our Murphy Scholars is inspiring to us all.
We are happy to share some reflections from two current Scholars, as they think about their time in school and facing adversity during these challenging times.
The statements below represent responses from a survey Murphy Scholars are asked to complete each semester. We assess Scholar wellbeing as well as program efficacy. Data pulled from these surveys are managed by staff alongside an evaluation consultant.
Scholars were asked to share a photo of when they first signed as Murphy Scholars and a photo of them presently. We are so excited to see their growth as students and look forward to what their future holds after graduation.

What do you hope your "legacy" to be as you leave high school?
I want to leave high school being remembered for my optimism and courage during difficult times. I want to be remembered as the first student to host a Hispanic Heritage and Black History Month celebration and for helping with various fundraising projects and finding ways to still help those in need during these times. I want to be remembered as someone who made everyone around feel welcomed and loved despite their self-doubts or insecurities. I want to be remembered as someone who wasn't afraid to speak up to injustice and work to change it in her school community. Describe your experience this semester as it relates to COVID-19. My experience with COVID-19 this semester has been hectic. My father is the only employed parent in my household and when he got the virus there was a lot of financial uncertainty. My little sisters, who attend a CPS school were e-learning, but I was the only one with a working laptop. Thankfully, my siblings were able to borrow laptops from school but although we had equipment, there would be a lot of connectivity issues due to the number of people online. During the times when my mom would have to run important errands and I would have to care for my sisters and help them with their schoolwork, while doing my own schoolwork, it was tough. In addition to all of this, my grandmother passed away from COVID and that has been very challenging. I also miss seeing some of my friends and being able to be a typical teen. |

What do you hope your "legacy" to be as you leave high school? I hope to leave a legacy of a kind and caring person; a person driven and determined to succeed against all odds. I want to be remembered as someone who left a positive mark inside and outside of the school community and as a great addition to all the clubs and sports that I became involved in. Lastly, I want to leave a legacy as someone who helped to build up others and help them to reach their own goals and successes. Describe your experience this semester as it relates to COVID-19. This semester has been very stressful and challenging due to COVID-19 . Not being in school full time and not being involved in the activities I was once a part of has taken its toll on me. These things affected my motivation and desire to put my best foot forward at times. The pandemic took away a lot of the things that I would do to destress. However, I eventually found my motivation again and I continued to push forward . |
