As a Murphy Scholar, what type of assistance did you receive in preparation for college?
Being a Murphy Scholar has made all the difference in my life. DMSF provided me the opportunity to attend Saint Ignatius College Prep, which my family would have never thought financially possible. DMSF’s constant support from day one was amazing. They hosted many events to unify our Class of 2021. From our summer bridge programs, leadership training workshops, community service projects, mentoring, studying, and more, DMSF was preparing us to be the best version of ourselves. Being a Murphy Scholar opened the door for me to become a Schmitt Scholar as well, which strengthened my leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. All this to say, DMSF advocated for my success not only in high school but in college as well! DMSF provided constant assistance throughout my entire college application process. Even during times when I was applying to theatre programs and believed I could handle things myself, they were constantly encouraging and supporting me in every way they could. I had a great relationship with my DMSF college advisor, who directed me especially with the financial aid aspects of the schools I was considering. He was trustworthy, knowledgeable, and a great mentor. He made an effort to stay updated with my thoughts and decisions, and made my journey to attending TCU an exciting one! We had meetings that helped me narrow down my choices and reassure myself that I was on the right path. When I was applying to colleges, DMSF provided me with resources for waivers and reduced application fees, which was a great help to my family. DMSF kept me motivated and always made things fun. There was never a moment where I had not felt the complete love and support from my friends at DMSF. The pandemic has changed so much in our daily interactions and has impacted how people view their future goals, especially young people. What are some of the activities you’re participating in and ways you remain focused? During the pandemic, I have tried my best to keep myself busy and focus on my goals. Maintaining structure has been a huge help in this. Creating schedules and deciding how to distribute time is very beneficial. Especially as a freshman in TCU’s theatre program, I have tried to involve myself in as many performance opportunities as possible. Therefore, trying to go to the practice rooms and rehearse my songs and lines a few times a week is crucial in staying focused and prepared. I have also been finding different environments to complete work around campus that help me concentrate. A change of scenery is always helpful! Charise is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre with an acting concentration. During her time at St. Ignatius, she was president of her theatre troupe, co-president of her acapella group, a retreat leader, an Arrupe senior mentor, a church cantor, and a social buddy at a local autism center. After TCU, Charise hopes to perform professionally and immerse herself into the world of theatre and film acting.
