Behind every golfer is more than just a scorecard; there is a story shaped by discipline, long-standing relationships, and unique access. For decades, the fairways have served as a meeting ground for a highly educated and professionally diverse community of leaders who understand the power of a shared connection.
But what happens when that network of opportunity is opened to those who need it most?
For nearly forty years, the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF) has answered that question by harnessing the power of the golf community to expand educational opportunities for talented students from under-resourced communities across the Chicago area. What makes DMSF unique is that golf is not simply a fundraising vehicle; it is woven into the organization’s DNA.
As DMSF CEO Cindy Hallums explains:
“Golf has been woven into the fabric of DMSF since our founding. The relationships built through this game have helped create life-changing opportunities for thousands of Murphy Scholars. Our growth over the last 37 years is a direct reflection of a community that continues to show up, invest in young people, and believe in the transformative power of education.”
This commitment is most visible on the first Monday of every June during the DMSF Golf Classic. Recognized as the largest charitable golf event in the nation, the Golf Classic has raised more than $44.2 million over its 37-year history, including the record high $3.4 million raised at this year’s 37th Annual DMSF Golf Classic. These funds do more than just provide scholarships; they fuel a comprehensive support system that includes mentoring, college success programming, and career development opportunities for Murphy Scholars. The success of this event proves that when golfers choose to invest, they transform their personal access into a pathway for others.
While the Golf Classic provides the resources, the Murphy Caddie Program in partnership with our 22 club partners, provides the experience. Each summer, more than 100 Murphy Scholars work as caddies at clubs throughout Chicago’s North Shore and western suburbs. For many of these students, it is their first time stepping onto a golf course.
The impact is transformative. The caddie yard serves as a bridge between two worlds, allowing Scholars to develop confidence, resilience, and professional communication skills. It creates a space where a simple conversation on the course can evolve into a mentorship or a career pathway.
DMSF Board Member Jim Kaplan, a lifelong advocate and supporter of the program, emphasizes that the partnership between the game and the individual is essential for personal growth. Kaplan notes:
“Golf and caddying just go together. It’s a partnership… [it] creates relationships that help students envision possibilities beyond what they may have previously imagined.”
The ultimate testament to this program’s success is its role in college access. To date, more than 410 Murphy Scholars have earned the Evans Scholarship, which provides full tuition and housing to college.
The community who support our mission recognizes that the resources and relationships found within the golf community carry a tremendous weight. They see golf not just as a game they love, but as a platform for meaningful impact.
