Volunteer at DMSFDMSF relies on the assistance of volunteers on a daily basis. From helping in the office to interviewing applicants to serving on a committee, DMSF volunteers provide thousands of hours of service each year, helping us meet our mission of igniting potential and enriching the lives of academically qualified students from economically under-resourced neighborhoods.

MentoringMurphy Scholar mentors have the unique opportunity to help influence the life of one of tomorrow’s leaders by serving as role models with a special interest in the academic success and personal growth of their mentees. The guiding hand of a caring mentor can have a profound and lasting impact on a Murphy Scholar, and has the potential of creating a lifelong relationship.
Expectations and RequirementsMentors are expected to interact with their mentees on a regular basis, speaking by phone once or twice a month and meeting in person on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. DMSF facilitates these meetings by hosting several social events each year where mentors and mentees can gather together for an afternoon or evening of activities. An overview can be found here. To become a mentor, volunteers must pass a background check and participate in a three-hour training program. Once completed, the new mentor is matched by DMSF staff with an existing Scholar, oftentimes, a freshman in high school. If you are interested in becoming a Mentor, please contact Armando Barron, Director of Programs, at armando@dmsf.org. |

CommitteesVolunteers sit on many different DMSF committees, including the Education Committee, Finance Committee, Golf Committee, Caddie Committee, and the Development Committee to name a few. Most committees meet three or four times per year. To learn more about joining one of our committees, contact Alina Gonzalez, Development Manager, at alina@dmsf.org.
